“The greater our knowledge increases, the greater our ignorance unfolds” – John F Kennedy
I am born in an era – where technology is intrusive, invasive, pervasive. Yet, I am oblivious to the fact that I am so dependent on technology – everyday, I can switch on the lights of my room, chat with my friends on my cell phone, surf seamlessly on the information highway, locate long lost friends through social networking sites – all without a single drop of sweat. And I take them all for granted. Never did I realise that if technology was taken away from me this very instant, I would be booted out of my comfort zone – like a happy goldfish out of its fishbowl.
An example of a compelling technology is of course, the Internet. It created such a massive impact on us, such that I feel society today is vastly different as compared to 100 years ago – social, economical, political and sometimes cultural.
As I am typing this particular sentence, our world is getting smaller and “flatter” – people and businesses from all over the world communicating and collaborating with one another seamlessly. For instance, science is a social activity, and its progress depends on researchers sharing information. Throughout the world, scientists by the thousands collaborate, compete, and constantly expand our understanding. With facilitation of Internet Technology, serving as magnets of intellect, it attract great minds from around the globe and across disciplines contributing to innovation.
In addition, the Internet introduced a lower barrier to entry for businesses to take part in the “playing field” and thus, this “flattening” caused competitive arena between industrial and emerging market countries to level. It is inevitable that technology is constantly moulding the world and our perspectives.
Hence, the birth of my blog, iReconnoiter – where I go on an exploration journey, sharing personal encounters of our brave new technoworld.
